VOX Radio in Liberia
With a burden to reach the people of Liberia with the gospel...especially the young people...Joseph Kebbie and his wife Genevieve set out to provide access to the gospel to as many as possible by using radio. And, then in 2017, VOX Radio 97.5FM debuted! From humble beginnings broadcasting with a limited signal coverage, the station now reaches milions in Liberia!
The VOX Radio journey began when God reminded Joseph of His divine intervention during the Liberian civil war, a conflict that claimed thousands of lives and left many mutilated and traumatized, often at the hands of child soldiers. Joseph's miraculous survival from this brutal period ignited a dream in him—to blanket Africa with the Gospel of Christ. This dream became clearer when he was sponsored to study media at Media Village in Cape Town.
With newfound knowledge in Christian media, Joseph and his wife set out to realize their vision: establishing a radio station to reach former child soldiers, now young men and women, in Liberia. The mission was clear—to use radio to reach the youth of Liberia with a holistic approach, mirroring Jesus' example of teaching and doing good.
However, this mission was not without challenges. From paying for a building they couldn’t access to start the station, the road was tough. But in 2017, God honored their perseverance when VOX Radio 97.5 debuted in Liberia. Broadcasting from a shipping container with limited signal coverage and relying on a diesel generator, they reached an estimated 38,000 people.
Support from like-minded ministries such as Galcom and YNOP provided solar power and financial assistance, allowing VOX Radio to extend its broadcast hours and deepen its connection with the audience.
Despite broadcasting from a sweltering shipping container in West Africa’s heat and humidity, the VOX Radio team continued to share Jesus on air and engaged in impactful off-air activities. They hosted soccer games, provided hygiene kits to schoolgirls, organized Christmas parties for kids, and helped pay medical bills for the less fortunate.
With God’s help and support from friends, they began constructing a permanent building. Their vision was clear: continue intentional ministry, move out of the shipping container, extend broadcast time to 24/7, and expand coverage. In 2022, they upgraded from a 40 ft pipe to a 30-meter tower, extending their reach to 500,000 people.
God sent more allies, and through a collective effort with Reach Beyond UK, they received a grant from The Jerusalem Trust to roof the building.
Through a collective efforts by Galcom, dditional support from the Elmer H. Schmidt Christian Broadcasting Fund allowed VOX to move into its new building. Partnering with the iconic ELWA Radio to host their antennas, VOX Radio expanded its reach dramatically.
On June 4, with the help of American and Canadian engineers, the team in Liberia joined Galcom USA’s Tom and Stacy Blackstone in prayer before switching on the transmitter at 5:50 pm local time. From their new tower location in Monrovia, VOX Radio could be heard in five counties with full coverage and three counties with partial coverage, reaching over 3 million people—far exceeding expectations.
VOX Radio is now collaborating with local churches to continue spreading the Gospel on the airwaves. Their holistic ministry approach includes partnering with the Liberian Military and the office of the Army Chaplain to provide evangelistic programs, and they are in talks with the Liberian Police to offer crime prevention and civil education programs. The station also launched a music recording studio to support young Liberian musicians.
Today, Joseph and Genevieve are committed to expanding their ministry to new territories, aiming to reach the Kissi people in Northern Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea. This broadcast will also reach the Fulani and Mandingo people, known for their Islamic missionary work among the Kissi.
The VOX Radio story is not just about Joseph, Genevieve, and the VOX Radio team—it’s about God bringing together passionate men and women like you to ensure someone hears about Christ.
